Poliwag, the Tadpole Pokémon, is a Water-type creature introduced in Generation I. It evolves into Poliwhirl starting at level 25, which then evolves into Poliwrath with a Water Stone or Politoed by trading while holding a King’s Rock. Poliwag is widely recognized for the distinctive spiral pattern on its belly, which swirls in different directions depending on the region. This spiral is said to be visible through its translucent skin and can be used to hypnotize opponents. Poliwag primarily inhabits freshwater ponds, lakes, and rivers, preferring clear, cool water. Its diet consists mainly of small aquatic insects and algae. In the wild, Poliwag are typically shy and will often hide by burying themselves in the mud at the bottom of bodies of water, leaving only their eyes visible. Their soft, thin skin requires them to stay hydrated, making water their essential habitat. In the Pokémon anime, Misty, one of Ash's original companions, famously caught a Poliwag, which later evolved into a Poliwhirl and then a Politoed, becoming a staple of her team. Poliwag’s simple yet memorable design and its early presence in the franchise have cemented its place as a beloved and iconic Pokémon. Its evolutionary line offers versatility, with Poliwrath being a Water/Fighting type and Politoed remaining a pure Water type, showcasing adaptation and choice within its development.
