Porygon-Z is a Normal-type Virtual Pokémon, introduced in Generation IV as the final evolution of the Porygon line. Its existence is a testament to the digital age, as it is an upgraded version of Porygon2, itself an upgrade to the original Porygon. However, the upgrade process that created Porygon-Z was flawed, resulting in a Pokémon that can be erratic and unstable, sometimes even malfunctioning. This glitchy nature is often reflected in its animations and behavior within the games and anime. In the main series games, Porygon-Z evolves from Porygon2 when traded holding a Dubious Disc, following Porygon2's evolution from Porygon when traded holding an Up-Grade. Its unique evolution method and artificial origins make it stand out from more organically evolved Pokémon. Porygon-Z has no natural habitat, being a completely man-made Pokémon designed for space exploration. Its diet, if it can be said to have one, would be digital data. Its behavior is often described as mischievous and unpredictable, sometimes flying in unexpected directions or making strange noises. As a Normal-type, it is weak to Fighting-type moves, resistant to Ghost-type moves, and immune to Ghost-type moves in the main series games. In the anime, Porygon and its evolutions were famously involved in an incident that led to them being largely absent from future episodes, adding to their unique cultural significance.
