Sandygast is a Ghost/Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII, native to the Alola region. Known as the Sand Heap Pokémon, it is often found on beaches, where it forms from grudges and sand. Its body is composed entirely of sand, and it is characterized by a small red shovel stuck into its head, which it cherishes greatly. Sandygast is a relatively small Pokémon, standing at about 1'08" and weighing 154.3 lbs. Its behavior is largely influenced by its shovel; if the shovel is removed, Sandygast becomes enraged and will attack those who took it. This protective instinct extends to its evolution, Palossand, which is a larger sandcastle-like Pokémon that traps and drains the life force of those who dare to touch it. In the Pokémon games and anime, Sandygast often appears as a mischievous and somewhat territorial creature, embodying the playful yet potentially dangerous aspects of a haunted beach. Its unique typing gives it interesting matchups, being immune to Normal and Fighting moves, but vulnerable to Water, Grass, and Ice. Sandygast's design draws inspiration from Japanese folklore concerning tsukumogami, objects that gain a spirit after a long existence, and the common sight of sand sculptures on beaches.
