Hippowdon is a Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV, evolving from Hippopotas at level 34. Its body is covered in specialized pores that allow it to expel sand, creating powerful sandstorms to deter predators or trap prey. These sandstorms are a key part of its defensive and offensive strategies, making it a formidable presence in its natural habitat, which primarily consists of vast deserts and arid regions. Hippowdon is largely solitary, preferring to roam its territory alone, except during breeding seasons. Its diet consists mainly of desert vegetation, which it can locate even in harsh conditions. In the Pokémon games, Hippowdon is often utilized for its high defensive stats and its ability to set up Sandstorm via its Sand Stream ability, which damages non-Ground, Rock, or Steel-type Pokémon each turn. It made appearances in the anime, often depicted as a powerful and sometimes territorial Pokémon, reinforcing its image as a force of nature in the desert.
